How to calculate the area of a circle

  • To calculate the sq. ft. of a circle, multiply the radius by the radius, then multiply by 3.14.
  • The radius is half the distance across the circle.


Example: 15’ x 15’ = 225 x 3.14 = 706.5 sq. ft.

How to calculate the area of a oval

  • To calculate the sq. ft. of an oval, multiply radius (A) by radius (B), then multiply by 3.14.
  • Find the center point to measure the two radius.


Example: 5’ x 10’ x 3.14 = 157 sq. ft.

How to calculate the area of a trapezoid

  • A trapezoid is a 4 sided figure with one pair of parallel sides.
  • Measure the length of each parallel side (Base A & B) in feet.
  • Add the lengths together.
  • Multiply the result by the height.
  • Divide the result by 2


Example: 15’ + 25’= 40 x 10’= 400 ÷ 2 = 200 sq. ft.

How to calculate the area of a parallelogram

  • A parallelogram is a 4 sided shape having two pairs of parallel lines.
  • Opposite sides are equal in length and opposite angles are equal in measure.
  • To find the area of a parallelogram, multiply the length by the height.

  • To figure the area of a triangle, multiply the base by the height and divide by 2


Example: 20’ x 20’ = 400 ’ ÷ 2 = 200 sq. ft.

How to calculate the area of an odd shaped area

  • Any area bounded by more than 4 sides may be divided into a series of shapes making it easier to calculate.
  • The sum of the shapes is the square footage needed.


Example:

Shape A : 10’ x 10’ = 100 sq.ft.

Shape B : 10’ x 15’ = 150 ÷ 2 = 75 sq.ft.

Sum of the shapes : 100’ + 75’ = 175 sq.ft.
